My Interaction with a few teenagers
Where do I begin?
Recently, we’ve had the privilege of hosting some secondary school students. Honestly, I was impressed by how bright they were. Though a little loquacious, they were readily inquisitive, taking in all they were being taught, the right detail at the right time.
As I introduced SAF Talk-2-Me Campaign and emphasized on how much value an effective guidance and counselling system adds to any school system, they all seemed to really follow.
100% of them admitted that a lot of the times, just having that someone to open up to is what keeps them moving. 100% means the boys included. Some of them were boarding students obviously, so Mum and Dad are not there all the time.
I was particularly touched with what one of the girls said, She said “I think for me, what makes it hard for me to open up to someone is the fear of being judged, I always think ‘how will those people look at me and treat me afterwards’, that’s what bothers me the most”.
Another student said “Career wise, a lot of the times you cannot follow your passion because your parents stand in the way! They are the ones who decide what you should study whether you fit in there or not!”
A third student said “Sometimes even if I know I can do better in a subject than I’m already doing, I just don’t feel the need to. Because I feel it may not necessarily be something I’ll use in future. Most of the times, we don’t even know what the career we choose entails, you only find out after you are already in and it’s too late, and to feel among, you just have to do it anyway!”
I must say I learnt a lot from my interaction with them. No matter how bright, independent and excellent you are, at a point you just need that someone, for warmth, for assurance, for guidance, for motivation, I could go on and on.
The more I interacted with them, the more I believed in Campaigns like SAF Talk-2-Me, that highlight the aspects of the schools’ system we are missing out on. Guidance and Counselling being the most vital. For any effective Guidance and Counselling system, what those students stated as concerns could have been taken care of in a flash.
SAF Talk-2-Me wants to work with Parents, Schools and the community at large to bring the best out of every child. Make every child achieve the best version of themselves through emotional connection, academic and social motivation, career guidance and a lot more!
